I started listening to Led Zeppelin when I was 16 years old. And according to Spotify I continue to be a Top fan, 18 years after I started burning their music onto CDs. Robert Plant’s voice and harmonica playing is a large part of why they are my favourite band of all time.
The moment behind the painting of Robert Plant with the dove
During a 1973 Led Zeppelin concert in San Francisco, six white doves were released at the end of Stairway to Heaven. One flew back toward the stage and landed on Robert Plant’s outstretched hand. It wasn’t staged. It wasn’t a trained bird. It stayed for only a few seconds, just long enough for photographer Neal Preston to capture the epic moment.
I wanted to paint that juxtaposition: the wild-haired rock star with a beer and cigarette in one hand, and a delicate white dove resting in the other.

60+ hours went into the original. The original painting took over 60 hours to complete, using a combination of airbrush, traditional brushwork and gold leaf.

A Rockstar and a Golden Dove
The dove was originally created with gold leaf, inspired by the Stairway to Heaven lyric “all that glitters is gold.” I painted over the gold leaf with transparent layers of paint with a brush and airbrush, leaving a subtle glow underneath.
That luminosity is one of the details I love most about the original painting, and it's captured in the professionally photographed print reproductions.
